The Story in Brief
Tesco is one of the world’s best-known retailers, operating thousands of stores across the UK and Europe. With cash handling still playing an important role in daily store activity, the business needed a solution that could support speed, accuracy, and consistency at scale.
Cashmaster’s relationship with Tesco began more than 20 years ago, following successful trials in some of the company’s largest stores. Those early results showed clear potential to improve how cash was counted, recorded, and managed in store.
The objective was to put in place a solution that would support daily store routines, strengthen confidence in cash handling, and continue evolving with the business over time.

The Challenge
Tesco needed more than a basic cash counter. The solution had to support a wide range of count types, including loose and packaged cash, vouchers, coupons, checks, tokens, and foreign coins. It also needed to store multiple register numbers and operator IDs and connect with back-office systems.
Store variation added another layer of complexity. Different kiosk and register setups meant the business needed a solution flexible enough to work across the estate without compromising speed or accuracy.
The requirement was clear: a dependable, scalable solution that could fit Tesco’s processes, support reconciliation, and remain reliable over the long term.

The Solution
Cashmaster designed a bespoke solution for Tesco that exceeded the company’s counting and reconciliation requirements. The original rollout centred on the Cashmaster Sigma 105, giving stores a reliable way to count loose and packaged cash, store till numbers and operator IDs, and support back-office reconciliation across different store formats. Cashmaster also developed enhanced till cup intelligence, allowing different till cups with different weights to be used in the same stores, which was essential in supporting Tesco’s kiosk environments.
Following the success of the trial, Cashmaster devices were rolled out widely across the Tesco estate and became part of the daily cash handling routine. Over time, the relationship strengthened, and the solution became a trusted part of Tesco’s store operations.
As the estate continued to evolve, Tesco began upgrading from Sigma 105 to Cashmaster One Pro, with deployment starting in mid-2024. This gave the business a clear path to modernise its installed base while building on a solution already proven in store and trusted across the estate.
The Outcome
The rollout gave Tesco a faster and more dependable approach to daily cash handling. What began with successful trials in some of its largest stores grew into a long-term solution used across the estate.
Today, Cashmaster devices are used throughout the day to set floats, process pickups, count takings, and prepare bank deposits. With more than 6,900 devices supplied and usage averaging six times per day in store, the solution has become part of Tesco’s daily routine.

What This Means for Grocers Like You
For grocers operating at scale, cash handling needs to do more than speed up the count. It also needs to work reliably across different store formats, support reconciliation, and fit naturally into daily store routines.
Tesco’s experience shows the value of a solution that delivers early, scales across the estate, and continues to evolve as store needs change. A strong cash handling setup should not only support stores today, but also give the business a clear path to modernise over time.
