Per Store, Per Register Process Time

The Story in Brief

This Singapore supermarket chain has been operating for more than a century and has grown into a well-known name in the local grocery market. As part of its wider focus on improving store efficiency, the business identified cash handling as an area where a better process could make a meaningful difference.

With cash still playing an important role in daily operations, the business wanted a more efficient way to support store teams and reduce the time being spent on repetitive counting tasks.

The Challenge

Cash handling across the estate was still highly manual. Store teams were preparing floats, completing till lifts, and counting registers several times each day, with the work mainly carried out in on-site cash offices.

The process was taking too long. Cashiers were spending extended periods preparing and reconciling registers, while supervisors then had to spend additional time verifying the figures. In some cases, the full process could take up to an hour a day per store, per register.

Discrepancies created even more pressure. Double counts, reporting errors, and manual record keeping added extra steps and made it harder for teams to move through the routine efficiently.

The business needed a solution that could reduce the time spent preparing and counting tills, cut back on manual input, and make the process easier to manage across stores.

The Solution

A new cash handling process was introduced in collaboration with the management team, helping reduce manual input, improve accuracy, and streamline daily cash routines across stores. Cashmaster One Max with integrated Cashmaster Printer One was selected as the best fit for the business.

The solution gave each store the ability to count more efficiently while also printing and storing float count details. The integrated printer was a key part of the setup, removing the need for manual paper record keeping and giving stores a clearer, more reliable process to follow.

Training was delivered through store workshops, helping teams adopt the new process quickly and confidently. Staff soon recognised the benefits of a faster and more accurate approach to daily till counts.

The result was a more structured approach to cash handling, one that reduced reliance on manual input while giving supervisors and cashiers a simpler routine to work through in store.

Cash Management Revolutionized

The Outcome

The project delivered clear operational gains. Counting times were significantly reduced for cashiers, and supervisors no longer needed to carry out recounts, removing a major source of delay from the process.

The solution also reduced the time spent manually recording and entering data, freeing up supervisors to add value in other areas of the store. That shift helped the business move cash handling away from being a time-heavy routine and toward a more efficient, controlled process.

The financial impact was just as strong. The new setup is expected to generate annual cost savings of more than S$1.5 million across the business.

What changed was not only the speed of the count, but the amount of manual work surrounding it. The business gained a simpler process, stronger store-level control, and more time for teams to focus on the wider operation

What This Means for Grocers Like You

For grocers, the cost of manual cash handling is often felt across the whole store. When cashiers and supervisors spend too much time counting, checking, and recording tills, that time is pulled away from other operational priorities.

A more structured process helps reduce that pressure. Faster counts, fewer recounts, and less manual record keeping can improve control while giving store teams more time to focus on the day-to-day running of the business.
