The Story in Brief
Poundland built its success on a high-volume, value-driven retail model, with a large proportion of transactions being paid in cash. As the business expanded, keeping daily cash handling efficient became more important across the estate.
With cash volumes increasing at the registers, the business needed a faster and more controlled way to manage daily cash handling without adding pressure on store teams.
Improving reconciliation, reducing manual counting, and maintaining visibility across the cash process became key operational priorities.
The Challenge
As the store estate expanded, high cash volumes at the register were starting to affect operational efficiency. With an average of six cash tills per store and at least two cash counts each day, the time spent on counting and reconciliation quickly added up.
The business needed to ensure tills were being counted as quickly and accurately as possible. It also needed the solution to work alongside its own management systems, so count data could support immediate reconciliation rather than creating more manual work for store teams.
At the same time, better process control was important for reducing the risk of cash loss through theft or error. The solution had to support speed, accuracy, and integration across a growing national store base.

The Solution
Cashmaster originally supported Poundland with Sigma 170 devices, configured to fit the business’s cash handling process and integrate with its management systems for instant reconciliation reporting.
As the solution proved its value across the estate, it became a trusted part of Poundland’s cash handling process, helping stores count faster, reconcile more efficiently, and maintain stronger control over cash.
In 2021, as the Sigma range was being retired, Poundland began upgrading to Cashmaster One Plus. Building on the success of the existing solution, the business continued with Cashmaster and has since upgraded a large part of its estate to the newer platform.
This gave Poundland a clear path to modernise its setup while maintaining continuity for store teams.
The Outcome
Across the estate, Poundland saved approximately 150 hours per day compared with manual counting, creating recurring annual savings of more than £300,000. The commercial return was strong, with ROI achieved in 24 weeks.
Just as importantly, the business put in place a process that could grow and adapt over time. Till counts and reconciliation became faster and easier to manage, while the move to Cashmaster One Plus helped refresh a large part of the installed estate.
What changed was not only speed, but longevity. Poundland moved from a solution that supported immediate efficiency gains to one that has continued to evolve with the business.

What This Means for Retailers Like You
For retailers with large store estates, cash handling needs to do more than solve today’s counting problems. It also needs to support the business as older hardware is retired and store systems evolve.
A strong solution should improve daily efficiency while giving the business a clear upgrade path over time. That is what helps protect continuity in store while keeping the wider estate moving forward.
