Many Americans save their spare change, with the average person having $113 worth of coins at home. It’s a testament to how every penny counts!

Data from the 2024 Diary of Consumer Payment Choice shows that Americans made an average of seven cash payments in 2023, proving that cash usage continues steadily—even with digital options available.

Cash is often the go-to for purchases under $50, accounting for nearly half of such transactions. This demonstrates cash’s convenience and appeal for everyday spending.

Over 90% of consumers plan to keep cash on hand, whether for spending or saving. Cash is still trusted as a secure and tangible store of value.

Most Americans carry between $48 and $82, but some people carry even more as they value having cash within easy reach.

While many Americans explore digital options, 59% still prefer to keep cash available, especially those aged 50+, who are more likely to ensure they have it on hand.

About 53% of Americans keep an average of $500 in cash at home for emergencies, recognizing the need for immediate funds if unexpected events arise.

Though rare, about 1 in every 10,000 bills could be counterfeit. However, tools like counterfeit detection machines and pens help prevent counterfeits from entering circulation.

In 2022 alone, the U.S. Secret Service intercepted $22 million in counterfeit cash, underscoring active measures to safeguard the nation’s cash supply.

Counterfeiting has existed since the Civil War era when nearly a third of all U.S. currency was believed to be fake. Today’s systems ensure that counterfeit notes are far less common.

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing produces around 38 million banknotes daily, totaling roughly $541 million in face value. However, this doesn't translate into an increase in the overall money supply. In fact, approximately 95% of the newly printed notes each year are simply used to replace those that are already in circulation.
